Residence and laboratory
SPATIAL - sommer lab '24 will focus on developing innovative approaches to art and technology, with an emphasis on 3D sound, immersive media, and software development. The project is designed to encourage creative thinking and experimentation with new forms of expression through the medium of sound. In addition to the fixed media format, i.e. closed compositions, the project places a strong emphasis on performativity and live presentation of the sound work.
The collaboration with leading institutions and international partners such as OTTOsonics, Tangible Music Lab, ZiMMT, IEM Graz, spæs - Lab Berlin, FUD and FF UJEP, SVITAVA - transmedia art lab, promises not only quality educational content, but also an exceptional network of experts and artists.
The main project partner, the Austrian OTTOsonics, will support the residency with its do-it-yourself open-source platform for ambisonic sound. In the case of OTTOsonics, those interested in spatial sound can download printouts from the knowledge database available on the association's website and print out any number of loudspeaker echo chambers based on a template developed specifically for the platform. In this way, OTTOsonics helps interested parties to take the first step towards building their Ambisonic sound system.
The three-week SPATIAL residential and educational program will offer participants and interested parties the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills through workshops, lectures, and individual consultations with surround sound experts. In addition to an intensive educational program, the symposium will focus on practical applications, philosophical aspects of working with spatial sound, and presentation of participants' work. The highlight of the project will be the MELUSINES public concert on Saturday 27 July. The evening will give the general public a glimpse and listen into the world of ambisonics and will offer a presentation of the artworks created during the residency.
Lab program
The program for the first week of the symposium will focus on inspiration, the second on practice, and the third week on the realization of artworks. The program is structured to grasp working with 3D sound comprehensively. The primary language of communication due to the international composition of lecturers and residents is English.
