Spatial sommer lab 2024 - open call

We are the phonon~ crew, living and working in Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic, since 2017.Our main focus is on electronic music, sound art and live spatial sound. With this open call, we invite artists, sound designers, performers and researchers to spend three weeks in July exploring the interweaving of spatial sound, acoustic perception and the sonic environment of North Bohemia as part of the SPATIAL sommer lab. The lab consists of a residency, workshops, a series of lectures and an Ambisonics concert MELUSINES.

Agenda

In the field of sound art, we focus on the role of hearing in the interaction with our everyday environment. Is there a possibility that by cultivating our auditory perception we can improve our connection to our environment, be it social or physical, and rethink the way we embody ourselves in it? Distraction, fragmentation, diminishing capacity for deep engagement and diminishing resilience are just some of the tendencies that can be associated with human attention today. Sustaining attention seems to be becoming a difficult task that needs to be addressed and developed in equal measure. In the days when digital landscapes are seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, we ask ourselves: will any of this contribute to a positive evolution of our experience? What role does immersive media play in this discourse? Specifically, how might composed and performed spatial soundscapes contribute to the cultivation of our perceptual and communication skills?

What are we looking for?

Concepts for audio works, either acousmatic or performative, to be developed during the residency and presented at the public residency output - the Ambisonics concert MELUSINES. We are looking for artists who are familiar with Ambisonics and use it in their practice, as well as artists who want to explore the field for the first time.
